Today begun at 4.00am.... finger!
We had packed our bags the previous night, laid out clothes & prepared breakfast.
Once awake the plan was to simply get dressed, eat breakfast & order an Uber to the airport.
There was a 30 minute long moment of panic when we awoke & the apartment's internet wasn't working & we were unable to order an Uber.
We were dressed early & prepared to walk the streets till we found a security guard who could help us order a taxi.
Thankfully as I tugged on my 2nd boot, the Wi-Fi came back on again.
Tom ordered an Uber & we had an instant hit, with the driver only 1 minute away!
We were on our way to the airport ahead of schedule by 15 minutes!
Our first flight is only domestic & takes us to Johannesburg.
It's a shock that my checked in back pack is now only 11kg's. This is a huge decrease on weight from the beginning of our travels when it was sitting just under 25kg's. Tom's is just skimming the 20kg mark now. His still has a bit of weight carrying both the sleeping bags. We laugh that the weight decrease from my bag is from 6 months of cosmetic usage!
Once our flight lands we have 2 hours to collect our luggage, make our way to the international terminals & check in again before 10.15am. We've had smaller time limits in bigger airports, I'm sure it will be fine.
The plane company is called Kalulula & the whole plane is a bright green, like kermit the frog.
The flight goes by uneventfully. I fall asleep as soon as I take my seat & long before the plane leaves the ground. Tom also sleep's the whole way.
Our Cape Town to Johannesburg flight arrives 10 minutes early & being seated in row 7 means we are one of the first out of the plane & running through the airport.
Amazingly from the time we leave the plane to the time we check the bags back in at the new terminal, it is a record breaking 24 minutes!
Damn we are getting good at navigating airports!
We also learn that our flight from Johannesburg to Sao Paulo has been delayed by 2 hours, while the next flight from Sao Paulo to Mexico City is still on time. This is actually great for us, it reduces our layover from 7 to 5 hours & gives us more time in the Johannesburg airport.
We get a coffee & some breakfast before walking down to our boarding gate. For some reason there are pigeons walking around inside the airport here, it must be a common occurrence cause we can see pigeon spikes preventing them from landing on top of things.
The boarding gate is changed an hour before we are meant to depart & we walk back to the other end of the Terminal. There are a lot of Brazilians who are wearing or carrying Ironman merchandise from a recent race. These people are incredible!
We boarded our flight to Sao Paulo at 12.28pm, we are running later than our delayed departure time, which was meant to be 12.30pm.
I instantly fall asleep & don't wake up till just before 2pm. Tom thinks the plane might have taken off at 1pm but was engrossed in the newest dead pool movie & didn't look.
We are given lunch at 2.30pm & eat a delicious vegetarian tortellini with haloumi, spinach, tomato, mushroom & a glass of wine. The menu, meals & service is very good. As is the cleanliness, chair space & movie selection.
Not a bad way to spend a 12 hour long haul flight. It's very confusing to be flying the same direction east to west, with the sun, and gaining back 5 hours of daylight over the duration of the flight.
We land in Sao Paulo at 7.30pm on the Wednesday, it's 12.30am in Johannesburg. We have 4 hours to kill before our next flight.
We easily find our next boarding gate & order coffee, beer & water to regenerate.
We both managed to sleep on the plane, but still feel pretty sleepy. My feet are all swollen & fluidy.
We finally board our last plane at 11pm, which will take us to Mexico City. Again, we both instantly get comfortable & pass out before the plane leaves the runway. I am woken for dinner, which is more delicuous vegetarian pasta. Tom doesn't want food & goes back to sleep. As soon as I eat my food, I go back to sleep & don't even wake up when my plate & rubbish are taken away & my tray table stowed. I'm a bit embarrassed by that when I wake up, much later.
Finally the captain makes the call for the cabin to prepare for landing & Mexico City lights up the land underneath us. It's 6.52am on the Thursday & still dark outside.
We're both feeling the jet lag & It's not a pleasant feeling.
I think the best thing will be the security of checking into our hostel & having a hot shower. These things could be hours away though.
This is one of the longest time periods for a blog post yet, taking up 34 hours, which is also our transit time.
We're excited to touch down, feel good again & explore a new continent!
