Today was a 'sleep in' till 6am, followed by breakfast by 7am & we were all on the truck by 8am. Today was a very boring day dedicated to driving 300+ kilometres across Tanzania. The roads of Tanzania are riddled with speed bumps, weigh bridges, police stops & traffic jams. We drove out of Arusha, were I snapped some nice photos out of the truck window.
I love the brief glimpses into the local people's lives as they go about their business. This mornings business was a local market, my favourite! So full of hustle & bustle, culture, vibrant colour, sound & smell. The weather today was gloomy, lots of dark rain clouds hung heavy in the sky. This unfortunately blocked out our view of Kilimanjaro as we drove past. It also made for a boring day of sight seeing.
At lunch time we stopped the truck out the front of an abandoned petrol station & shopping complex that was once called Kisangiro. Here we broke out the tables & prepared salad sandwiches & fruit for everyone to eat. Lunch was an uneventful affair which was shortened when the rain caught up to us. Today we were meant to drive to a town called Pangani & stop for the night. Our tour guide, Jurumba said ATC have stopped using this camping ground due to inadequate facilities. Instead we continued on for another 2 hours and stopped at the town called Aorogwe & we would be the first group to trial a new campsite.
It looks to have been an old hotel that was shut down, but has recently been reopened. The grass we camped on was green & comfortable. The washroom facilities weren't intended for campers & we are given access to 2 hotel rooms so we can use the toilet & have hot showers. I'll always remember the hotel rooms smelling of moth balls, it was so strong & I'm sure it was potent enough to kill a small child. After dinner & showers we hopped into our tents & were asleep before too long.
