Day 227 - Nat & Dom Arrive In Bangkok

It's finally the day !!!
We've been looking forward to this day since precisely the 29th of May!
I still remember where we were in Nepal when we got the news that they were flying over to travel through Thailand with us.

One big realisation that we have come to terms with since travelling, is how much we both need our friends & family.  We've missed everyone a surprisingly HUGE amount.
Their flight is due to arrive int he next hour & we've checked the flights progress to make sure it will be on time. 30 minutes before they are due to land, we make a quick journey to a nearby store to buy cold celebratory beers!

Our accommodation is so close to the airport, we can hear & see each plane as it arrives or departs.
The plane that they are on arrives 7 minutes early, according to the online flight updates & we crack our first beer!

It was an hour of anxious waiting before their taxi appeared outside our hotel.
Our reunion was lots of firm hugs, back slaps & some of the biggest smiles our faces have ever made.
It felt like a dream, to finally be at this moment. But then again, this whole trip has been a dream that we've never woken up from.
We helped them into the foyer of our hotel, where Dom had some admin things to do & we organised the luggage & transport to our accommodation together in Bangkok city.

The taxi from Patch hotel to our next accommodation, called Isanook, was a 45 minute drive.
Bangkok is a really cool city with some really diversely shaped sky scrapers. By the time we arrived at Isanook which is in the Bang Rak district, it was just after 2pm. The beers were long gone & we started on the duty free alcohol while chatting in Nat & Dom's room doing a more thorough catch up than what our online messaging usually allows.

The afternoon quickly slipped through our fingers & before too long it was dark. Our first night in Bangkok would include a trip to one of their famous night markets. Ratchada Rot Fai night market.
We took a Grab (Thailand's version of Uber) to the night market, which was approximately 30 minutes drive away. There was smaller markets closer to our hotel, but this one was highly recommended & only happens Thursday - Sunday.

It was well worth the drive. This market is HUGE!
There is kilometres of stalls selling anything & everything, live music & food, food, glorious food!
The boys were almost immediately ensnared into one of the bars selling beer towers, while Nat & I got lost in the stalls.  It was an absolute blurr of sights, smells & sounds.
The blurr effect from the sensory overload, but also from the copious amounts of alcohol consumed earlier that day.
The blurr overtook our shopping fever & we returned to the bar where the boys were & joined in on the food & beer.  We decided to get a tuk tuk back to our hotel & try this out again to do some shopping in the next few nights, in a considerably more sober mind set.

I had a big day of sight seeing planned tomorrow, sleep was going to be critical.
The tuk tuk drive home was squishy (I don't think they are meant for 4 people) loud & very fun!

The beds at Isanook where quite comfortable, a lot more comfortable than what Tom & I are used to. Undoubtedly, we would of slept anywhere that night after all the excitement, alcohol & jet lag.

This photo looks irrelevant & it's very dark, but it was captured right after my ankle gave way, for NO reason & I fell over on the road... embarrassing !
