Day 219, 220 & 221 - San Jose

So today is technically day 32 of the tour & our last day of the tour. It's a bit stupid that you book a 32 day tour but day 1 & day 32 are for arriving & departing.  It seems to be a thing though with tours & it's kinda misleading.
Thankfully we have another 2 days after today before we leave. The hangover is real !!!

Tom, James & Dan seem determined to hold the hangover beast at bay by drinking breakfast beers.
I am less defensive & lie in bed, only getting up to hug the people leaving. We've said goodbye to a few treasured people today, people that we met way back in Mexico! Hannah, Dolly, Carla & Diarmuid, just to name a few!

After lunch we check out of this current hostel & head to another one that is 10km's away in a historical part of the city full of old buildings. Our new hostel is inside of a heritage building, across from a park. It also happens to be $10 cheaper per night. Which sounds scabby, but we can do a lot in Asia with the $30 we will save.

To my delight the hostel has a resident cat called Claire. I first notice her sitting on top of the fridge in the kitchen looking down on us humans like we're peasants. She's a dear old thing with a typical naughty tortie personality that is to be expected from a tortieshell cat, her fractious attitude is made worse by her ripe old age of 13 & the obvious onset of arthritis. Despite how stiff she appears & her initial reluctance towards some movements, she is found in some rather unusual places, like on top of the fridge. She also has free roam of any spare bed or couch, though she likes a bed to herself & refused to snuggle with me.

Our new hostel is quite nice, is oozing charm, centrally located & very clean & comfortable.
It's a great place to recover from our current hangovers & lay low over the next few days.
Tours are exhausting & it's nice to allow ourselves some nothing days in between continents.

I've got big plans to catch up on all the blogs, maybe visit a museum & cook some meals in the large kitchen. Cooking together is something we very much miss.
Sadly on our second day here, we say goodbye to James who is heading home to Yorkshire. He's a top lad & someone we will miss.
Another glum thing about today is the weather which is all rain. We duck out at mid morning to go to the supermarket & buy groceries. While walking there a man who is likely homeless, high or mentally ill, spots us walking, runs across the road yelling & nearly body slams into Tom. Thankfully Tom just sees him out of the corner of his eye & can move the few millimetres he did to avoid the collision.  The guy then continues running down the road yelling at people on the foot path, spitting food out of his mouth & trying to snatch bags & purses out of hands.
This is why we hate big cities!

Unfortunately we see him again 10 minutes later when he runs past us from behind & tries to grab my purse out of my hand.
After we arrive back with our groceries & make lunch, we decide that's enough adventure for the day. It would be the last time we would walk the streets of San Jose. We decide the museum's are not very interesting to us personally, especially after talking to another man in our hostel who visited them.

We use the 2 days to do a few life admin jobs, such as check emails & apply for an Esta visa. Only in America would you be required to apply for a visa just to transit through the airport.
It's a pain in the ass, let me tell you & required a lot of information. Apart from the pedantic & tedious website, the underwhelming Wi-Fi signal created it's own problems.
Luckily Tom has buckets more patients than I do & we are now the owners of Esta visa's which will last us 2 years.  The other problem with the Wi-Fi was the inability for me to be able to load, let alone publish new blogs. Oh well, we don't come to these places in the world to use their amazing Wi-Fi.

With this in mind, I give up on the blogs & being frustrated. Instead I go downstairs & select some books from the shelf.
I read 3 books over the 3 days that we stayed here. An effort I'm proud of because each book had just under 350 pages.
My favourite of the 3 was a book called The Silver Linings Play Book by Matthew Quick. Tom told me it was made into a movie. It was a really good book & a thought compelling read. I would definitely recommend it & read it again.

While Tom had a similar attitude regarding the Wi-Fi signal, his choice in media was the digital form & a zombie series on Netflix, which he had previously downloaded.

It was a really nice few days relaxing, doing nothing, cooking & eating.
