Day 204 - Travelling From Antigua, Guatemala To Copan, Honduras

Today we leave the lemon tree hostel & say goodbye to whoever is left of the first tour group. Most people who are still here will fly out today or tomorrow.
I hate goodbyes like this & avoid them like the plague. Besides, I really feel like we will see all these people again & therefore "see you later" is way more appropriate!

By 9am we have loaded the bags on the roof & have picked out seats. We then rush around the corner to a cafe that is open & order takeaway food & coffee. While waiting, I notice shirt's for sale & notice the staff wearing them. Theres a picture of Donald Trump & some Spanish writing which basically says Donald is an asshole. For some reason, I really like it & buy one.

On the bus, Tom & I are in the last row & have the 4 seats to ourselves. It's an 8 hour day of travel & we make ourselves comfortable.
We crossed into Honduras just before 4pm & Veronica our guide took all of our passpprts & $10 US each for the border. We weren't required to individually go into the immigration or customs, instead Veronica was given a 2 day permit allowing us to come back through easily in 2 days.

The population of Honduras is 9 million & the population of Copan alone is 40,000. This area is famous for its cattle farming & a lot of people live rural. Honduras in Spanish means depth, due to its deep coastal seas.
The population is very dependant on agriculture & as we have travelled close to the border the soil has become a more vibrant & fertile red.
Fun fact - Honduras is the murder capital of the world, with statists based on the population, more homicides happen in this country than anywhere else in the world.

The town of Copan is famous for the Copan Mayan ruins, something we will definitely be seeing! It's only about 30 minutes from the border & our hotel is in the centre of town. We have 2 beds per room & private bathrooms, which is a real treat when travelling!
It's comfortable enough & we dump our bags before heading out to dinner at a restaurant Veronica has booked.

The food is really nice & we are introduced to a local spiced rum. Inside the bottle is cloves, cinnamon & pepper corns, as well as other things, I'm sure. It's strange & delicious. Like an alcoholic chai latte, but made with rum instead of milk.

After dinner, the fellas, including Tom want to go out, but unfortunately because of the size of the town & the week night, not much is open. They settle for a few beers & some tequila on the roof top.
I'm very happy to be in bed instead, even after Mexico, tequila is just not my thing.
