Day 196 - Travelling from Flores To Rio Dulce & The Finca Paraiso Hot Waterfalls

It was a reasonably good start time today & for once we all felt fresh & not hungover.
Tom & I got up earlier than most people to go for a walk around Flores in the early hours of sunlight & enjoy a breakfast with just us 2.
Flores is such a pretty place & we really felt like we could easily spend another night here. We found a lake side hotel that also advertised an amazing breakfast on the 2nd floor balcony.
Food with a view is arguably one of the best things about travelling!
We both ate an amazing 3 cheese & vegetable omelette with fresh herbs & coffee.
The coffee is so good in Guatemala & I'm happily drinking it with no sugar, syrup or milk.

After breakfast we met the group at the bus, put the bags on the roof & climbed in. We have a few hours of driving today.
Listening to music in the van, which today was some old school classic from the 80's & 90's, chatting & laughing always makes the drive go fast.
Outside the window we pass rolling hills, thick jungle, farming land & farm animals everywhere! It's very picturesque & the small villages grant us a small glimpse at how the people live.
At lunch we encounter some rain clouds which chase us for a good hour, but thankfully clear up as we approach the hot waterfalls.

We've all been itching with anticipation to get out & stretch our legs as well as explore these hot water falls. Suzie explained that the water is heated from the nearby volcanoes.
On a day without rain the water in the pools right at the top is very hot & can cause burns, but the pools lower down are progressively cooler. As it passes over the waterfall it's still warm & then quickly becomes cold, so the water under the falls in the water hole is a normal cold temperature.
Because we arrived after the rain, the current was quite strong & the hot pools had been diluted, so there was no risk of burns in the top pools & the water under the falls was very cold.

We crossed the river, lower down from the waterfall where it was safer & then slowly climbed up through the very slippery mud & tree roots to sit in the top pools.
We sat up here for about 40 minutes trying out the different pools. It was nice to be sitting in nature listening to the birds & trickling water. The only slight detractor was that the rocks in the pools were very sharp & sometimes hurt your bum.  Eventually we had soaked up enough & made our way back down to the river & across to the group. On our way back to the van we once again dodged the local children who were asking for money, trying to sell coconuts or the one boy who had a go pro half hidden under a towel who was supposedly trying to sell it for his older brother.
We suspect the go pro was stolen from someone, somewhere & avoided him as well as the kids asking for money.

Once back on the bus we drove for a few more hours to the Bienvenidos A Puerto Frontera. We then all collected our bags & climbed into a boat which would take us across the lake to our island accommodation.  It's called the Hacienda Tijax Jungle Eco lodge.
A really cool little island with a harbour area for boats, floating platforms for the paths & the little jungle lodges.
It's got a really nice pool, a bar, restaurant & we can't wait to do a whole heap of nothing tomorrow.
