Day 198 - Travelling from Rio Dulce To Antigua

It's time to say goodbye to our wild jungle lodge cabin & return to the main land & acquaint ourselves with a new town. We packed our bags, ate a nice enough breakfast while playing with the resident kittens, paid our tab from yesterday which stung a little bit & checked out.

The boat ride back to the main land was quieter than the previous boat ride to the island.
Once there we immediately got our bags & walked to the waiting bus which would take us the rest of the way to Antigua.
Today was a gross 9 hours driving which was a constant stomach squirming of up's, down's, twists & turns. My big plans to write blogs has been overwhelmingly denied by the motion sickness. But it was well worth the long & unpleasant travel day to get to Antigua. It would become one of our favourite places on the tour & thankfully a place where we could spend a few days.

Antigua is a UNESCO, columbian heritage town with beautiful paved roads, churches, a central park area & gorgeous 360 degree mountain views. We have gone up in altitude & the air is dramatically dryer & colder.  Antigua is famous for being the start point for tourists who want to hike any of the 3 local volcano's. This is exactly what we want to do & at dinner tonight we will get a pep talk.

Our hostel is called the lemon tree hostel & is on fifth avenue, fairly central & conveniently located right next to a brewery. The hostel is quite large & features a big courtyard with a plane in the centre, plenty of seating, plants, a common area with pool table, beer pong, dartboard & huge dorms of 10+ beds. The girls & boys are once again split up into separate dorms.

We had a short amount of time to shower before heading out into the town for dinner at Suzie's favourite restaurant. We were really hungry by this point & ordered a big serving of vegetarian nachos & fajitas.
During dinner a man from OX adventures come in to discuss the various options of hiking Pacaya Volcano. The closest, safest but also an active volcano.
17 out of 18 of the people on our tour group have elected to do the overnight hike & camping package on the volcano.

The pep talk is successful in making us significantly excited! With a departure time of 1.30pm, most of the boys head out to the local Irish pub, while most of the girls head home to get a good night's sleep.
