Rishikesh – New Delhi
It was time to leave Rishikesh and travel to our final destination in India, New Delhi the capital. Only this time we would be staying for 4 days, instead of just passing through.
The journey began at 7am as we checked out of our hostel and walked down to the main street to find a tuk tuk to take us to the bus station. Surprisingly the first price he asked for wasn’t a total rip off and it wasn’t a long negotiation process before we were climbing in.
The bus stand was the usual patch of dirt and rubbish full of unorganised bus’s and chaos, it took us multiple goes to find the right bus & become seated.
The bus left on time at 9am & I fell asleep nearly instantly while Tom devoured a few hours of Netflix. I was awoken just after 1pm as the bus pulled in for a 30 minute stop. We ordered vegetarian burgers & stretched our legs before the journey continued.

We arrived at Delhi just after 4pm, at the exact same bus station we had used on our way to Rishikesh. We hopped off the bus, collected our bags from underneath and dusted them off, for whatever reason they were more dusty & filthy than normal.
Our Hostel was located reasonably close and we decided instead of bartering with a tuk tuk driver, we would try our luck on the metro, what’s the worst that can happen?
The metro turned out to be cleaner, safer & easier than we expected. We found out later it is constantly being renovated and made easy to use for people who are illiterate, as was obvious by the different coloured feet painted on the floor dictating the different lines. I was also very happy to see that there are carriages for women only, providing safety and security on the metro.
We changed lines twice and went 9 stops before getting off the metro. Our hostel was a short walk down the road. We easily found our hostel & checked in. It was a relief to be off the streets that were some of the filthiest we have ever seen in India.

We are both thoroughly exhausted and after showering, we collapse onto the bed and fall asleep, despite the air con not working and maintaining a temperature of 32 degrees.
