We bought a one way ticket!

We bought a one way ticket!

First stop was - Hong Kong, with a short 2 hour stop over in Kuala Lumpur, where my watch was mysteriously smashed going through the Xray scanner...

I was also hit hard in the face by a cold. Thankfully I was able to sleep for the first 8 hour flight as well as the 2nd 4 hour flight.

We arrived! Thursday the 15th of March just after lunch.

On the descent in the plane we received a spectacular view of Hong Kong, the many gigantic buildings spread across the lowest parts of the island whilst still boasting the large sections dominated by mountainous topography. Many bridges and ferries shooting out, connecting the islands to their many harbours.

Once we were free and clear of customs and the airport, we indulged in an excited high five and commended ourselves on how easy the journey had been. Approximately 5 minutes later the bus we were travelling on blew out a tyre. To make matters worse the replacement bus that arrived soon after also had a flay tyre! Despite all of this, it was impossible to wipe the smile from our faces and extinguish the excitement and anticipation that was building in us.

We had booked simple, cheap, tiny & convenient accommodation in the middle of Hong Kong in the suburb of Kowloon. Our room was on the 9th floor and was half the size of a standard 1 car garage, including the bathroom which was separated from the bedroom by a glass screen. If we weren't 100% comfortable with each others bodily functions, we sure will be after this! Another funny discovery was that we both have to sit sideways on the toilet as there is not enough room to accommodate long, lanky people to sit normally on the toilet and that the toilet paper can't be flushed and it has to be put into a bin... it was after a few uses that I discovered the absurd signage above the tiny bin, whoopsy!

We spent a few hours on the first day exploring the local suburb. We found Kowloon Park which was pretty much across the street from our accommodation, where we saw the flamingos, among many other birds from across the globe & 1 tiny black kitten by the Macaw enclosure. In the park we saw a man with a samurai sword practising some sort of martial arts, as well as quite a lot of people doing a trance like walk with monkey like hand movements that we assumed was tai-chi. After a couple of hours exploring and a pretty good feed of ramen & curry (we couldn't easily find dumplings) we returned to our accomodation and slept a solid 12 hours! Surprisingly our first 24 hours in Hong Kong was easy, we had no problems finding our way or communicating.

Until tomorrow!

- Alli
